How to Hem Your Jeans with the Original Hem

how to hem your jeans using the original hem

Have you ever found that one pair of jeans that you want more than chocolate cake, only to discover in the dressing room that the legs are too long? With denim companies like Grace in LA, Miss Me, Cello, and Rock Revival sticking to a standard 34-inch inseam on denim styles, us shorties sometimes have a rough time when shopping for jeans.

Fear not my vertically challenged friends! Here’s a quick 8-step tutorial on How to Hem Your Jeans with the Original Hem. It’s SUPER easy and fast.

Hemming Your Jeans DIY Tutorial

Step 1: Measure and determine your inseam length (This is the seam on the inside of your leg and is the second number listed on the size you buy). If you already know what length you currently buy, use that measurement. My inseam measurement was 31.5-inches.

Step 2: Fold the fabric in on itself at the inside seam until it measures the length you want. Think of it as if you are making a pleat on the inside of the jean. You will line up the fold on the outside directly next to the thick stitching at the hem. NOTE: The original hem will be included into your inseam

Step 3: Use sewing pins to pin your new hem in place. Don’t be shy! You want it to stay in place. Start at the inside seam, and pin it in place as you go around the bottom.hemming-your-jeans-with-and-keep-the-bottom

This is what the inside will look like

Step 4: Repeat on the other leg.hemming-jeans

Step 5: Line the legs of your pinned jeans up and make sure they are even. It they aren’t–adjust them and

Step 6: Pick out a thread that will blend in with your denim jeans. Start sewing a basic basting stitch at the inside seams, removing pins as you go. Back stitch at the beginning and the end.

Remove the pins before sewing over them

Step 7: You will have a flap inside of the jean. If you want, you can remove it by cutting the extra fabric along the seam, leaving a ½-inch seam allowance. If you want a less permanent fix, you can press the seam with an iron and hand stitch each side in place. This way, you can always remove the hem and return the jean to its original length. Or you can just leave it alone! (That’s what I did)

You can’t even tell!

What to Wear with Wedges

Do you have your eye on a cute pair of wedges but don’t know what to wear them with? Well we’ve got it covered! We have paired some of the most stylish trends, including dresses, jumpsuits and shorts, with our new summer wedges so you can get ideas on what to wear with wedges!

Printed and patterned shorts are so popular during the summer, and it is apparent why. Wearing shorts is the perfect way to show off those great legs and your sun-kissed skin. Wedges are also a great way to enhance your legs by accentuating your calves. Here we have paired this adorable outfit with a pair of Bamboo strappy wedges. The straps help the shoe appear less bulky while at the same time complimenting the outfit.

Skinny Jeans

Everyone has that favorite pair of skinny jeans. Skinny jeans look great with a closed-toe boot style wedge. Here we have paired these dark wash Flying Monkey skinny jeans with a sequin crop top and the City Classified Desert Wedges. These shoes are comfortable and easier to wear than stiletto heels, so you can still add height without sacrificing comfort.

Bootcut Jeans

Flared leg and bootcut jeans are popular and can look great with wedges. The wedges and jeans would look best paired together if the bottom of the jean covers most of the wedge. You do not want the jeans too short or too long. If they are too short, most of the wedge will be shown and your legs will appear shorter. If the jeans are too long, the edge of the hem will fray and look worn. Here we have paired a pair of LA Idol bootcut jeans and a patterned tank top with a pair of Volatile wedges.

We love jumpsuits. They are definitely for the bold and daring and when styled properly can be the highlight of your wardrobe. We paired this black and tan strapless jumpsuit with 5 inch platform wedges for extra drama. If you are going to be daring by wearing a jumpsuit why not go all out and wear dramatic wedges?

High-Low Maxi Dress

Here we have paired a high-low maxi dress with a pair of rose gold Volatile wedges. When choosing wedges to pair with dresses try to pick wedges that match the formality of the dress. (Although a pair of polished wedges can make a casual dress more formal.) You do not want your shoes to diminish the elegance of the dress. Also, you may not always want your shoes to be the center of attention. For best results, your shoes and dress should show some cohesion.

Shorter Dresses

In the summertime, wear wedges with short dresses for a totally fashionable look. You have the luxury with a lot of short dresses to dress them up or leave them casual. Here we paired a casual cobalt blue high-low dress with fun jewelry and wedges. Since the dress is a solid color, you are able to wear wedges with print and patterns. The color in the pattern of this fun pair of Volcom wedges really compliments the color of the dress. On the other hand, we have this floral sheath dress that is paired with a dressier pair of black faux suede wedges.

Pre-Fall Fashion Essentials You Can’t Live Without

We know that there is still a decent amount of summer left, but it never hurts to start thinking ahead towards semi-cooler days. I don’t know about you, but now is the time that I start thinking about fall. I am a serious fan of the clothing… added cozy layers, socks, boots, light jackets, maybe a light scarf… there is no reason why you should deny the slight warming effect of these items. I definitely can’t deny the pull that a rad new pair of ankle boots has on me.

That’s why this year is going to be different.  I’m getting a head start. It helps that is quickly filling up with amazing, new pre-fall fashion essentials for you to choose from. I’ve decided to narrow my search down to 5 items that I can totally incorporate into my existing summer wardrobe for those cooler summer days and nights. I know that these 5 key items will transition perfectly into fall.

A quality pair of ankle boots is something that you can absolutely not live without! I LOVE ankle boots, and normally wear them year round.  Ankle books can be worn with shorts and tanks, or with maxi skirts, little dresses. Transition your ankle boot over to fall by pairing them with denim jeans and tights– I like adding socks too. We just started receiving some of our pre-fall ankle boots in and so far I’m a pretty big fan of the: Banjo Ankle Bootie, Missile- 13 Military Boot, and pretty much all of the Roxy Fall 2013 collection that will be hitting this week– so don’t forget to watch for them.

I can’t forget to talk about an absolute Back to School Essential for pretty much everyone, Backpacks.  Whenever I think of fall, I think of backpacks. Admittedly, my taste has changed now since was 8 and Lisa Frank ruled my world, darn unicorns got me every time. Now, I think along the lines of utility. I’m not in school anymore (sadface), graduating and “growing-up” has –somewhat–stepped in, but I still use a backpack for all of the traveling that I do on the weekends. I can’t go to a music festival or thrift hunt without my trusty backpack. School is just around the corner, so all the more reason to snag a great backpack, right? Pictured: Dakine Laurel 20L Backpack in Vera.

Also pictured is a pair of our Flying Monkey Premium Denim Skinny jeans. A few new pair of denim for fall is always a must-have! We have a huge selection of both women’s Silver Jeans Co long denim and LA Idol denim in various leg openings.

A lightweight jacket is another (definite) key item to have for fall– something that you can just throw on when the temperature cools down and not feel weighted down. I’m really digging our selection of vegan friendly leather jackets. The Jack by BB Dakota Bowen Jacket is a favorite of mine. Adding a scarf makes a world of difference to your look, too.

Summer Essentials

We are slowly but surely transitioning over into a new season. Despite all of this crazy Midwest weather that we’ve been experiencing, our heavy, cold climate apparel is being packed away to make room for lighter layers.

At some point as you start packing and unpacking you start to think about what add-ons you need to have in your wardrobe to complete your summer outfits. Personally I usually buy accessories, like a few new bracelets and rings, a super versatile pair of summer heels, flats and sandals, a light scarf, and a good jacket that I can transition easily amongst my outfits.

Once you find your essential add-ons creating a summer look will be easy. Below are a few of my newest add-on additions.

Above, the Golden Days thong sandal (only $9.90) from Charles Albert.

A great denim jacket from Silver Jeans Co. that will work with any outfit.

A summer scarf and our Glimmer of Gold gladiator sandal from Charles Albert.

Accessories and white denim shorts are a must! I love our bright Knot Your Average neon necklace and stacks of cute beaded bracelets! Visit us on Pinterest for a ton of DIY bracelet tutorials!

Summer add-ons are a must, and who can say no to $9.90 sandals?

We Heart White Denim

White jeans. It’s the freshest trend right now. I absolutely love a good pair of white denim jeans. A staple in anyone’s closet, white denim has broken the old adage that you cannot wear white after Labor Day. In fact, I’ve seen white worn extensively throughout the seasons, which is great!

You can take this warm weather wardrobe essential from casual to chic in one effortless motion.

We Heart White Denim

We Love Shorts and Capris

This spring, the only thing on our minds is the return of the sun, warmer temperatures, and how quickly we can be tempted to loose our heavy winter layers. Spring, for me, has always represented the idea of renewal. We begin the process of packing away our winter wardrobes to make room for all of the new, fresh spring styles that are currently blooming (like flowers) in stores. I have to admit that I am personally excited to see all of the new, fresh spring trends that are coming out.

Another bonus to warmer weather is the rapid loss in length that we see in bottoms! Inseams get shorter as the days grow longer and the temperatures rise.  I’m a huge fan of shorts & capris! I will clear out an entire shelf in my armoire (it’s huge) just for all of my returning shorts and all of the new styles that I just can’t pass up.

sukiI’m definitely loving all of the new spring styles emerging from Silver Jeans Co. I’ve been stalking their Pinterest page for inspiration and came across their Style Wars East vs. West board! Absolutely love how the bloggers have styled out such fun and unique outfits around different Silver Jeans Co. pieces. My favorite outfit was from the lovely west coast blogger, Jenny Wu of  Good, Bad, and Fab. Love, love, love the way she styled these yellow Suki capris with a floral print blouse.

LA IdolThe ever popular, LA Idol denim brand also has a TON of new spring short and capri styles. They’re known for their crazy embellished back pocket detail, but they also have several basic stitch back pocket styles to choose from.

LA Idol 2

But when it comes to chic embellishments, Miss Me denim takes the top spot. I’m a big fan of their (recently introduced) color pop embroidery stitching!

miss me

I just have to say, I’M SOOOOO EXCITED FOR SPRING! I cannot wait to show some leg and soak in some (much needed) vitamin D! My go-to outfit for spring is an oversized tee partially tucked into a pair of shorts, cute boho sandals and a statement necklace. What will you be wearing?

Bling into Spring

Never fear, blinged-out denim is here! I can assure you that this is definitely not a tribute to circus-worthy rhinestone embellishments.  These days all the hottest premium denim jeans are sporting chic, funky metal studs and other adornments that are “light years” away from the era of the Bedazzler. Oh yeah. It’s okay. I owned one too and I went WAY overboard with it.

The Bedazzler (via)

But fear not all you shiny loving fashionistas. Choose your style and personal touch with the help of these no-fail tips!

Rhinestone Embellished Denim Fits Best When Relaxed.

That’s right people. They’re not meant to be a second skin. You don’t want to look like an 80′s fashion mistake by buying your embellished shorts too tight.  Instead, go for semi-loose, boyfriend style cropped jeans or shorts with a comfortable rise.  One of my favorite embellished denim brands right now is LA Idol denim. With their fabulous pocket details and extreme side stitching, LA Idol provides the perfect pair of jeans, capris, bermudas or shorts for any fashionable denim devotee. If you want your denim to make a statement and not fade into your outfit, LA Idol denim is for you.

Wear Your Blingy Jeans with a Plain Tee.

I personally love plain tees, especially V-neck tees. That’s why I’m giving you the perfect excuse to break out that vintage rock band tee or soft boho inspired top created by this season’s favorite trend: crochet. You will keep the outfit from going over the edge of rhinestone-rocked ridiculousness by contrasting a studded jacket or blinged-out bottom with casual pieces.

Please Note: The same tip goes for footwear!  Keep it simple: add a pair of neutral wedges, casual sandals or low canvas sneaks to create an “un” thought-out outfit.

REMEMBER to Not Be Afraid to Accessorize.

There is no reason why you can’t bling into spring with fun accessories:  Bangle bracelets, bohemian beaded strands, layered necklaces and interesting earrings are a stellar way to add color to your outfit.

So embrace the BLING and let your style shine as brightly as your tastefully embellished bottom! Be sure to stop by any of your local Glik’s store locations or check us out online at for all of your summer denim needs!

Bling into Spring

Da Da Da Denim {Shorts}

Okay people, it’s official. The last day of winter was March 19th. Meaning spring is in full swing giving us longer days, warmer weather and (my personal fave) SUN!

Oh yes, I’m telling the truth people! The sun is a remedy for all our winter woes; it encourages good moods, less layers and showing some skin.

My friends Silver Jeans Co., LA Idol, Miss Me and I have put our style caps on, thought really, really, really hard and came up with the perfect idea for showing some stylish skin this summer! Can you guess what that idea is? Denim shorts!

That’s right, cut-off, frayed, cuffed, destructed, dark wash, medium wash, light wash and bling denim shorts. So many great styles to choose from and each with it’s own attitude. It’s music to my ears.

Silver Jeans Co. is rocking the denim world with body conscious fits for different silhouettes. Have a little shape to your derriere? A high rise, relaxed fit like the Suki denim short is a perfect fit. Not so curvy, but want people to know you have a shape? The Marti or McKenzie denim short has a low-rise, straight fit that will highlight all your best features!

You’ve been a fan of LA Idol’s thick stitch embroidery, unique wash values and most of all bling back pocket detailing. This summer fall for the cut-off raw hem of the LA Idol Flag Pocket Jean Short or the blinged-out LA Idol Flap Pocket Fringe Shorts.

Are you a girl with multi-dimensional style, who’s eager to make your fashion mark?  Miss me jeans knows who you are and have no trouble delivering you the style that you expect from their jeans but in a denim short.

Miss Me Trouser Short

Miss Me Wings Short

Machine Jeans attention to specialty wash value, finish and unique destructed looks has made it a leading brand choice among young fashionistas everywhere with a hip sense of style. Machine Jeans denim shorts are proving to be just as fabulous for this summer season.

So, embrace the sun and enjoy baring some skin. Be sure to stop by any of your local Glik’s store locations or check us out online at for all of you summer denim needs!
