Making Your Maxi Work for Fall

This week’s blog features maxi skirts and dresses. You first saw them this spring and summer made from light, slightly sheer chiffon layers, and they were paired with strappy bohemian sandals and wedges with statement sunglasses. Now that the weather is cooling off and the official first day of fall has already come to pass, we’re seeing maxis of all types – skirts and dresses – but they’re made of heavier fabrics and bold fall inspired prints.

Maxis are at the top our list for being the most versatile pieces to have in your wardrobe year round. Not only are they one of the most comfortable, flattering, and forgiving items of clothing for a woman to wear– they’re able to transition into any season with absolute ease. At first, you would think that it would be hard to style a maxi skirt for cooler weather – the key is to balance your outfit by layering items with complimenting silhouettes.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to style maxi skirts and dresses for fall.

Fall is my favorite time of the year to wear a classic moto inspired, faux leather jacket like this one from Jack by BB Dakota. It’s a solid and super versatile edition to any wardrobe and the cool beige body/black accenting sleeves gives this vegan-friendly, faux leather jacket standout appeal. I’ve paired this Jack by BB Dakota jacket with a black maxi skirt, a basic stripe long sleeve top, and a color-pop merlot wine red colored infinity scarf. You cannot see the boots because of the black maxi skirt’s length, but you can layer tights and over the knee socks underneath for added warmth.

Sweaters. They’re just as versatile as a maxi and can be worn as an extra layer with virtually anything. We know, we know – summer is hanging on for dear life this year (although, can we just admit that the weather has been pretty ah-mazing lately?).  Even though the weather hasn’t read the “it’s fall!” memo yet, we’re pretty sure that it’s still safe for you to layer up with an awesome, open front, oversized knit sweater, like the Verne Sweater from Jack by BB Dakota. Actually, sweaters of all kinds can be building blocks to your chic, yet functional maxi-inspired look.

So in the interest of getting into that fall spirit, we’re starting to transition out of our strappy summer sandals in favor of more closed toe, just below the knee boot greatness; we’re also a big fan of the ankle boot.  Try pairing a pair of under the knee boots like the Reef Bella Costas High Desert Suede Riding Boot with a side slit maxi skirt and knit sweater combo for a comfy, boho-inspired outfit.  We how the love the bold, aztec print of this red maxi skirt stands out against the solid oatmeal color of the Collette Sweater from BB Dakota.

So for those in-between times – when it is warm during the day chilly at night, and ridiculously cold in your office, classroom, etc. (seriously, what’s up with the A.C?) – we turn to layers, layers, and layers of fall’s essential items to fashionably pair with your favorite maxi.  Visit us online at gliks.com to view our huge selection of maxi skirts and dress, or visit any one of our 60 store locations across the Midwest.
