One of the best, and most exciting, things about fashion is that there are endless possibilities.  There are so many variations to mix and match the clothes you already have in your wardrobe; it is impossible to get bored! A good rule of thumb to live by is to wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable, while not being afraid to step out of your comfort zone.  That is where today’s topic comes in: mixing prints.

Now, you may be thinking, “there is no way I could ever pull that off!” Or, “I never know where to start or if the patterns actually match WITHOUT matching.” Mixing prints can be so simple and subtle, or big and bold, whatever your preference. We are here to give you a few tips and tricks on how to mix different patterns and prints, for year round style!

1. Match colors, Not prints

match colors

One of the simplest places to start is by having a black and white color scheme.  Try mixing a polka dot top with some striped pants, while making sure the colors match!  This is a great start for someone who is unsure of whether or not they can pull off mixing prints. However, we encourage you to be a little more daring and try a certain colorful color scheme instead.

2. Break up the look with solids

This is a personal favorite tip! Start by layering up your tops by wearing a solid color base or a chambray button up or a chic blazer! Then you can incorporate different patterns on your pants or under shirt. This tricks your mind into adapting to the fact you are mixing prints, yet breaking it up with a matching solid color!

3. Mix prints with different size scales

Having variations of size scales with your look helps add structure. This look can be achieved by wearing a blouse or sun dress with tiny floral print and pairing it with a denim jacket that features a bold striped design or pants that feature a large checkered print. Just make sure that the colors are coordinated!

4. Textured fabrics count as a print

This tip is super easy to incorporate into your wardrobe without giving it much thought.  Some examples of textured fabrics include: silk, leather, lace, tweed, or even textured sweaters with inverted patterns.  Slip on a leather skirt and pair it with a striped top with a plaid button up tied around your waist! Voila!

5. Stripes are considered neutrals

This is a huge tip to remember! Vertical stripes are always your friend, yet horizontal stripes are definitely a close acquaintance as well. If you are hesitant about mixing prints, start with a striped top, dress, pants, skirt, what-have-you. Then, pair with a fun, colorful print such as paisley, floral, boho, or diamonds. You can’t go wrong with mixing and matching patterns with a staple like stripes!

6. Match the same print in different colors

gingham

This is a fun way to invent your own version of two-piece sets! Match a black and white gingham tank with red and white gingham shorts, and you are all set for a summer day. Or, pair a colorful square print top with fun printed pants for spring, or throw on a fair isle cardigan with matching colors for a fall day.

7. Use accessories to mix prints

Bold accessories are super trendy right now, so don’t shy away from them! Mix and match prints by accessorizing with a plaid scarf, gingham heels, chunky statement earrings, a bamboo beach hat, or a palm print or leopard print clutch.
