Glik’s Five Fall Favorites

Five Fall FavoritesHello Autumn! The best season of the year is upon us and I couldn’t be more stoked to bust out my fall wardrobe. Here are my five fall favorites!

Wine Piko Top

Wine is my favorite color this fall and Piko tops are a must have staple piece. Add this color and this top together and you have the perfect fall basic. Dress this fall comfy bamboo top up with a long necklace and as the temperatures drop add a vest to this Piko top.

Long Necklaces

Long necklaces make for great accessory pieces. This neck candy looks great with a scoop neckline and can be adjusted to fit a length that works best for you. Pair a long necklace with a basic top for a classy and simple look.

Tall Riding Boots

Tall riding boots are a must have for fall. They look great with just about anything. Wear them with your skinny jeans and your favorite tops or sweaters for an effortless look.

Distressed Denim

Everyone always makes fun of distressed denim, saying “You paid money for your jeans to look like that?” Well of course we did, because distressed denim is trendy, and we girls love it. And let’s be honest, who wants to sit there and try to cut up their jeans to get the perfect distressed look? Distress denim is perfect for those warm fall days and look great with about any top!

Look by M Shawl Vest

Fall weather can be fickle here in the Midwest, one day it can be 80 degrees and the next day it can be 50 degrees, which makes layering great. One of my favorites this fall is the Look by M Shawl Vest, it is versatile and can be worn as a vest or a scarf.

                           Riding Boots  Long Necklace

Wine Piko tops, long necklaces, tall riding boots, distressed denim, and the Look by M shawl vest are my five fall favorites this year and I hope that you love them just as much as I do!

It’s Back | The Essential Plaid Scarf

The Blanket Scarf

For the past few seasons, the plaid blanket scarf has been the must-have accessory for fashion lovers everywhere. Not only does it serve a functional purpose and keep you warm on those chilly fall days, but it also offers endless styling opportunities making it a versatile piece well worth the investment.

Plaid Blanket Scarf

You already learned how to wear the blanket scarf here, but in order to keep this trendy piece relevant in your wardrobe; you also need to know what to wear your plaid scarf with.

Outfit Inspiration

This outfit should be a staple in your fall wardrobe rotation for so many reasons. Not only is it practical for every day wear, but it is also requires minimal effort. Each piece offers versatility, so you won’t be limited in your styling options. I’ve chosen a pair of Flying Monkey jeans, a basic long sleeve thermal from Able, a killer navy blue Fate vest, and our plaid blanket scarf (of course). This outfit works because it is understated and will leave you looking put together. Also, the navy blue vest has a mixed texture that contrasts nicely against the colors in the plaid scarf.

Plaid Blanket Scarf and Vest

The Infinity Scarf

Equally as wonderful as the blanket scarf is the infinity plaid scarf. Let’s be honest, most of us spend an overabundance of time trying to turn our blanket scarves into infinity scarves anyway, so this new style is a Godsend.

Plaid Infinity Scarf

Outfit Inspiration

To style this plaid scarf, I’ve selected a military inspired jacket from Amuse Society, a neutral colored striped shirt from Ginger G, and the same pair of Flying Monkeys from the first photo (see, they are a versatile pant!). Mixing patterns like the stripes in this shirt and the plaid scarf is a huge trend right now. Don’t be afraid to take a risk and be a little more fashion forward when styling your plaid scarf.

Plaid Infinity Scarf Gotta have it? Both of these must-have scarves will be available (at a special price, yay!) on gliks.com starting Monday, July 13th.

Warm Ways to Wear a Scarf This Winter

Layering is the key to staying warm this winter. Scarves are perfect for layering because they are warm and ever-so-stylish.

For inspiration, we referred to the book, “50 Ways to Wear a Scarf”, by Lauren Friedman. It is truly a must-have for scarf-wearers. Here are some of our favorite warm ways to wear scarves this winter…

The Flyaway Vest

A scarf doesn’t always have to go around your neck. Get more use out of your favorite scarf by creating a flyaway vest! This look can be created with an oblong scarf. We used our Looks Collections Plaid Blanket Scarf that is available in multiple colors.

Flyaway Vest

  • Step 1: Fold your scarf in half widthwise.
  • Step2: Tie the two sides of the top corner together.
  • Step 3: Take the folded side that is in your other hand and bring it together with the tied side.
  • Step 4: Tie the folded side and the tied side together to make one large knot.
  • Step 5: Make sure the knot is secure.
  • Step 6: Position the scarf so you can place your arms through the holes.

*A similar style, “The Kimono,” can be seen on pages 61-62 in the “50 Ways to Wear a Scarf” book.

The Hourglass

This look is super-fast, super-easy and a great way to accentuate your figure! To create this look, we used the Reversible Nordic Print Wool Scarf.

The Reversible Nordic Print Wool Scarf

  • Step 1: Obtain a long rectangular scarf and a belt of your choice.
  • Step 2: Drape the scarf around your neck and adjust it to your liking.
  • Step 3: Make sure the ends of the scarf are even.
  • Step 4: Secure the belt around the scarf and your waist.

*“The Hourglass” can be seen on pages 68-69 in the “50 Ways to Wear a Scarf” book.

The Lazy Girl

The Lazy Girl style is perfect for a day when you are short on time but still want to pull off a stylish look. We used Two-Toned Check Oblong Scarf that is available in a variety of colors.

Two-Tone Check Oblong Scarf

  • Step 1: Obtain a long rectangular scarf.
  • Step 2: Drape the scarf around your neck so that one side hangs lower than the other.
  • Step 3: Take the longer side of the scarf and start wrapping it around your neck.
  • Step 4: Bring the longer side all the way around your neck so it lays parallel to the short side.

*“The Lazy Girl” can be seen on pages 71-72 in the “50 Ways to Wear a Scarf” book.

The Knot

This style puts a creative twist on a traditional way to wear a scarf. It is a great way to add some style to a simple outfit. Here we used the Two-Toned Check Oblong Scarf that is available in a variety of colors.

Two-Tone Check Oblong Scarf

  • Step 1:  Fold your long scarf in half and make a loop with the folded end.
  • Step 2: Through the loop, grab one end of the scarf and pull it through.
  • Step 3: Open the loop again.
  • Step 4: Bring the remaining loose end over the top of the folded side and then pull through the loop. This will create the “knot” effect.

*“The Knot” can be seen on pages 76-77 in the “50 Ways to Wear a Scarf” book.

Warm Ways to Wear a Scarf This Winter

Men’s Sweaters at Glik’s

Just because the temperature outside is about to reach a low point doesn’t mean that your style has to also. The solution to your winter wardrobe blues is the essential men’s sweater. If you are new rocking the men’s sweater, there is no need to stress. Glik’s offers a lot of handsome and attractive men’s sweaters for men that will liven up your wardrobe during the fall and winter seasons.

1897 Sweater for MenNot only do these sweaters make for attractive attire but they are also functional, stylish, and a great way to stay warm! Sweaters can be worn on a dinner date, to a holiday party, or to work on casual Fridays. Even when wearing casual sweaters, you can look sharp and stylish.

Men's Sweaters

Men's Quarter-Zip Sweater

The secret to adding sweaters to your wardrobe is variation. At Glik’s you can choose between quarter-zip, shawl collar, full-zip, and hooded sweaters. It is important to make sure the style is appropriate for the occasion. For instance, the sweaters with the shawl necklines look a tad bit dressier than the hooded sweaters and would be appropriate to wear to a holiday party or even to work. And depending on how you layer them, these men’s sweaters can be worn in the fall, winter, and possibly even into the spring.

Retro-fit Men's Sweaters

Men's Sweaters

If you are looking for a way to get more bang for your buck, try a sweater in a neutral color. Neutral colors like black, brown, gray, or tan are usually more practical because they can be worn more often and with different wardrobe combinations. And you can always add color to your outfit by layering a neutral sweater over a colorful shirt or by adding colorful accessories like a watch or a scarf.

Layering clothing for the fall gives you the opportunity to show your creativity and style. Glik’s can help you find those essential layering pieces for fall!

The first fall essential on our list is the thin cardigan. Thin cardigans can be your best friend since they are easy to layer and create an effortless, yet stylish look. Our Poof Cardigans are the perfect thin layering sweater. You can be super trendy this fall season by throwing a cardigan on over your jumpsuits, rompers, or dresses.

Scarves

Who doesn’t love scarves!? If you are ever in need of an accessory to complete your outfit, a scarf is your go-to piece. Scarves are comfortable to wear and look amazing when layering your outfits. If you are hesitant to wear scarves because you would rather show off your necklaces– no worries!  Layering scarves and necklaces together is super cute and trendy. Wear your necklace on the top of your scarf or vice versa this fall.

Leggings

If you still want to wear leggings this fall, you are in luck! Leggings are great for layering and look great with tunics and dresses. For this look, we paired a plain dress with a fun patterned legging. It really adds character and personality to an otherwise simple dress! Another reason we love leggings is the fact that they look great tucked in tall riding boots or combat boots. (And they are oh, so comfortable!).

Chambray Shirt

Last, but certainly not least on our list, is the chambray shirt. If you don’t already have a chambray shirt you must get one! We are in love with this Ellison brand chambray button-up shirt. What You Will Need for DIY Fashion Gladiator Sandals:

IMG_8626

1.  First, you will need to lay the scarf out and cut it long ways. I folded it in half and lined up the edges in order to cut the scarf in a straight line. This is the scarf that I used.

2.  Take both pieces of the scarf and fold them in half.

It will loop around the toe post as shown above.

3.  Fold the left side down to the right and the right side down to the left as pictured.

4.  Twist the scarf and loop it around the straps of the flip flop until the strap is completely covered. Be sure to loop it up and under the strap.

5. Repeat steps on the other sandal. This is what they will look like after you are done. Now you can slip them on!

6.  Cross the straps around the back of your ankles and tie off. You can twist the scarf to achieve different looks.

Infinity Circle of Love | DIY How to Make an Infinity Scarf

Valentines Day 2014

Love is in the air!

As you prepare for Valentine’s Day, are you beginning to notice little displays of affection that are sometimes taken for granted the rest of the year? Handholding. Stolen kisses. It could be something as little as a glance. This is the time of year that people are on a quest for romance. And we find it everywhere.

Infinity sign with anchor and infinity nautical scarf

At Glik’s, we are channeling our romantic side with this year’s infinity scarf. The infinity sign has become a beacon of love, strength, and completion for many. Found in jewelry, scarves, clothing, and even on the skin in the form of tattoos, the infinity sign is a trending symbol that has grown exponentially. And its presence could be infinite (insert knee slap here).

shop Infinity scarf online

Worn year round, infinity scarves are one of the hottest fashion accessories for your wardrobe. Found in an assortment of solids, stripes, prints, and textures, these easy-to-wear scarves are great to style and go. And let’s not forget the variety of looks you can achieve by just switching your scarf! We are excited about the scarf line-up available this spring season at Glik’s.

infinityrotation

The infinity scarf is given its name because it is circular in shape, giving it an “infinite” quality. The circle is a symbol of love and is linked to many traditions, including wedding bands. To style this scarf you simply put the scarf around your neck, twist it to a “figure 8” or infinity sign, and pull the second loop over your head. There are, of course, many creative ways to style the infinity scarf differently for a unique look. But the beauty of the infinity scarf is that you don’t need to!

DIY–How to Make an Infinity Scarf from a Traditional Scarf

The infinity scarf is a favorite of many because of its simplicity. So what happens when you see a traditional scarf that you simply can’t pass up? We can show you how to turn any traditional scarf into an infinity scarf–temporarily and infinitely.step

To make a temporary infinity scarf is quite simple. Instead of sewing the edges together, we’re going to tie 3 knots. First, fold the scarf in half so the shorter sides come together. You should end up with half the original length. Second, tie the end corners together in a small knot on both sides. You should have 2 completed knots. Finally, pinch the edge of each side in the middle between the 2 knots, and tie them together. You will have 3 knots in a straight line across the seamed ends.

how to make an infinity scarf

To style this tied infinity scarf, loop the scarf around your neck with the knots behind your head and style as normal. The temporary infinity scarf is beneficial because you can always untie the knots and style the scarf traditionally later.

Dust Off Your Sewing Machine Ladies!

Sewn together your own Infinity Scarf

A downfall to the temporary infinity scarf, however, is that it can create a bit of bulk where the ends are tied. By sewing the ends of the traditional scarf together, you can create a seamless fit around your neck. Transforming any scarf into an infinity scarf is really not difficult! Don’t be intimidated, because anyone can do it!

Do it yourself infinity scarf

You will start off the same way you did with the tied infinity scarf by first folding the scarf in half so the shorter sides come together. Be sure the top of each side of the scarf is facing in. If it is hard to determine, you can look at the hem of the scarf to determine which side is the top. After you have the scarf folded and the ends of the scarf are flush, pin the sides together to hold it in place.

how to make your own infinity scarf

After the scarf is pinned, you are ready to sew the ends together using a basic stitch, backstitching at the beginning and end.  It is important to give the scarf at least a ¼” seam allowance (maybe a little more if the fabric is an open weave) to avoid a split in the seam later.

Infinity scarves online

When you are finished sewing the ends, trim the loose strings at each end.  Do not trim or cut the seam allowance of the scarf. This will prevent the seam from splitting.

Sew your own infinity scarf

Congratulations! You have a newly created infinity scarf! Altered for your convenience, your new favorite scarf print is now ready to be styled out in a breeze!

This year, let us all pledge to embrace the importance of love, family, and friendship not just on Valentine’s Day, but also all year long. The infinity sign has become an icon for love and strength. And you can wear it everyday with a cute and fashionable infinity scarf from Glik’s.

Check out our blog last week about Valentine’s Day outfits and gift ideas.
