Introducing: Sam!

Hi everyone! We wanted to introduce you to our newest buyer and member of our team, Sam Ryner. Sam recently graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and a Marketing Minor! Sam previously worked in our Holland Boutique store in Michigan and was thrilled to hear that our Home Office was looking for a new buyer.  She decided to pack up from her home state and move down to the Midwest for this amazing opportunity to become a buyer.

Here is a picture of Sam outside of the Holland Boutique store!

Sam is super excited to be a part of the Home Office team and still can’t believe she is living out her dream job as a fashion merchandising buyer.  She is currently our assistant buyer of women’s bottoms, women’s outerwear and women’s athletic clothes!  Sam is having so much fun learning new things each day on the job, as well as exploring her new home town of St. Louis, Missouri!

While working in one of our brick and mortar stores, Sam loved how every day was different.  Each day, there were different customers, different situations, and new clothing that arrived, so she was always on her toes. She is looking forward to working in the same fast-paced environment at home office, but now is getting to see how the process works from the other side! So far, her favorite part about working in Home Office is learning the buying process and seeing all of her work from start to finish. From picking out and buying the clothes, to sending them to the stores and being purchased by customers.  Sam said, “I am learning new things every single day and my goal is to focus on and master the categories I buy.” She also is excited about getting to meet all of her amazing coworkers, exploring a new city, and attending trade shows.

Speaking of trade shows, a few weeks ago Sam was able to attend the largest trade show of the year in Vegas, MAGIC.  According to Sam, “MAGIC was so much more than I expected, it was huge!”  Since she was a fashion merch major, Sam had been hearing and learning about MAGIC since her Freshmen year of college. “It was so cool to have that image in my mind for the past few years, and actually becoming reality!” Her favorite part of her first show was being around SO many people with common fashion interests and being able to see and choose product that no one else has seen before.

Magic Tradeshow 2016

For most, Las Vegas is all about the bright lights, over-the-top entertainment, nightlife and endless nights of gambling… but for us, Las Vegas is all about the world’s largest fashion marketplace, Magic!

magic-trade-show

The Magic tradeshow is where major players in the contemporary fashion and apparel-sourcing scene gather twice a year in Vegas. The largest, most influential network of merchants, vendors, manufacturers, and fashion personalities gather at several merchandised shows including:

  • Project
  • The Tents
  • WWDMagic
  • FN Platform
  • Sourcing at Magic
  • Project Womens
  • The Collective
  • Pool Tradeshow
  • WSA at Magic
  • Playground
  • CurveNV at Magic

Those who attend Magic market week also have access to seminars, trend reports, up and coming brands, and networking opportunities galore. It’s the who’s who in fast fashion and the place to be for many of the industry’s major players.

Our buying team at Glik’s attends Magic tradeshow twice a year to find the hottest trends to bring back to our stores in the Midwest.

Here is a glance of what our buyers saw while at Magic:

When in Vegas

It’s an otherworldly city, in the middle of the desert, filled with lights, outlandish occupants, entertainment, and most importantly, Magic. I’m not referring to the David Copperfield show at MGM Grand. No, I’m referring to Magic Trade Show, and the Glik’s buying team traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada this week for the sole fashionable purpose of style.

This monster of a convention plays host to shoe, apparel, and accessory brands from ALL over. If you’re in retail, no matter what your division, this is the place to be. Literally, there is so much going on in this small 72 hour window of time that–if you’re not careful– you have a chance of loosing your mind to sensory overload.

Here’s just a sneak peek of what happened in Vegas.

Meanwhile, back home in the Midwest…

534589327c6911e2802422000a9e0927_7Late afternoon we learned our fate. Our flight had been cancelled and we were stuck in Las Vegas for an extra day. Drat!

382183_10151455253538480_60866902_n-1We had to make due with our unfortunate circumstance by working poolside while under the attentive eyes of Glik’s President, Jeff Glik and Vice President, James Glik.
