New to the Buying Team: Sam!

Introducing: Sam!

Hi everyone! We wanted to introduce you to our newest buyer and member of our team, Sam Ryner. Sam recently graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and a Marketing Minor! Sam previously worked in our Holland Boutique store in Michigan and was thrilled to hear that our Home Office was looking for a new buyer.  She decided to pack up from her home state and move down to the Midwest for this amazing opportunity to become a buyer.

Here is a picture of Sam outside of the Holland Boutique store!

Sam is super excited to be a part of the Home Office team and still can’t believe she is living out her dream job as a fashion merchandising buyer.  She is currently our assistant buyer of women’s bottoms, women’s outerwear and women’s athletic clothes!  Sam is having so much fun learning new things each day on the job, as well as exploring her new home town of St. Louis, Missouri!

While working in one of our brick and mortar stores, Sam loved how every day was different.  Each day, there were different customers, different situations, and new clothing that arrived, so she was always on her toes. She is looking forward to working in the same fast-paced environment at home office, but now is getting to see how the process works from the other side! So far, her favorite part about working in Home Office is learning the buying process and seeing all of her work from start to finish. From picking out and buying the clothes, to sending them to the stores and being purchased by customers.  Sam said, “I am learning new things every single day and my goal is to focus on and master the categories I buy.” She also is excited about getting to meet all of her amazing coworkers, exploring a new city, and attending trade shows.

magic

Speaking of trade shows, a few weeks ago Sam was able to attend the largest trade show of the year in Vegas, MAGIC.  According to Sam, “MAGIC was so much more than I expected, it was huge!”  Since she was a fashion merch major, Sam had been hearing and learning about MAGIC since her Freshmen year of college. “It was so cool to have that image in my mind for the past few years, and actually becoming reality!” Her favorite part of her first show was being around SO many people with common fashion interests and being able to see and choose product that no one else has seen before.

Let’s get to know Sam a little bit better!

Trend Spotting at MAGIC 2016- Women’s and Shoes

Fashion, especially fast fashion, is constantly evolving and changing. Trying to keep up on the latest trends can be more than any one person can handle. That’s where we step in and do the legwork for you so when you walk into a Glik’s, all the latest and greatest fashions are available to you without the guesswork.

One of our main resources for trend spotting is tradeshows. Our buying team recently attended MAGIC, one of the biggest tradeshows of the year. Walking through the different shows at MAGIC is like walking through a gigantic mall, on a Saturday, at noon, when every store is having a sale. Basically, MAGIC is chaos. It is wonderfully crowded with booths full of great fashion and stylish people.

If you want to be in the know on upcoming trends, keep reading.

Shoe Trends:

1. Color is key.

Earth tones, shades of olive green, and blush are predicted to be major players for Spring 2017. These colorways were available in styles ranging from lace up ballet flats to ankle boots.

color forecasting footwear

2. It’s all in the details.

Cut out details are trending now for fall and this trend shows no sign of slowing down come spring.

3. Say goodbye to the middle man.

While a classic pair of riding boots is still a style staple, ankle boots and over-the-knee boots are the next big thing in footwear. Be on the lookout for over-the-knee boots coming soon to Glik’s!

CLOTHING TRENDS:

1. Stand out in camo print.

From tees to dresses to jackets, camouflage print was everywhere. This print will give you instant cool girl vibes.

camoflage clothing

2. Olive everything.

Whether it was olive green, army green, or somewhere in between, this trendy hue is at the forefront of fall fashion. This neutral shade will continue into spring 2017, so you’ll be able to wear your favorite pieces now and later.

3. Slay in (faux) suede.

This fabric is both buttery soft and oh-so-stylish. This combination leaves no doubt that faux suede is a trend to try.

Glik’s Men’s Buyers Attend Magic Market Week

Men’s buyers take on Las Vegas!

jim Glik and buyers Nicole and Kristin

For most, Vegas is all about the entertainment – whether it’s walking the strip to shop, trying to get lucky gambling, or going out to watch a show. For buyers, Las Vegas is all about Magic Market Week! Twice a year buyers from all over gather in Las Vegas for the Magic trade show. Glik’s buyers are among them, ready to acquire the hottest new fashions for the upcoming season.

The Men’s team started the week at the Agenda show. Agenda is where street wear and action sports meet to combine the industry’s biggest brands and up & comers under the same roof. This show is truly an experience with packed booths, loud music, and an overall casual atmosphere.  For some, the most notable part of the show is the presence of celebrities who come to support brands they are involved in. Big Sean, Rick Ross, French Montana, T.I., & Swizz Beats were among those in attendance at this year’s show. As you can imagine, Agenda is a great experience!

The Men’s first day in Las Vegas ended at Liberty Fairs. Although it is located next door, the Liberty show is very different from Agenda. This show incorporates Men’s forward thinking fashion in a creative & artistic atmosphere. Liberty gives a big city vibe with guys donning rolled selvedge jeans, Herschel Little American bags, and rocking the undercut hairstyle.

The Magic & Project shows are the biggest Men’s shows. These are the shows we attend to see most of our non-branded and private label vendors.

Glik’s at Magic Market Week 2013

Viva Las Vegas

All of the photos from our buying trip to MAGIC have been uploaded and organized, FINALLY.  I can’t believe that this time last week I was in Las Vegas hanging out with the buying team and exploring what seemed like hundreds of vendor booths.  My trip seemed like a blur even though we extended our stay an extra 2 days (not by choice) due to the crazy Midwest snow apocalypse.

WWDMAGIC is held in collaboration with Women’s Wear Daily and runs for three days. This event features on-trend fashion forecasts, networking events, seminars and all the current styles of the season. WWDMAGIC features more than 2,000 new & established brands that range across every price point and follow up-to-date trends.

We only had enough time to visit 3 shows.

  • WWDMAGIC features the most current and wide-ranging collection of women’s brands.
  • FNPLATFORM is the shoe show at MAGIC.
  • PROJECT MENSWEAR features an extensive collection of men’s fashion brands.

MAGIC holds more shows that feature all aspects of the fashion industry, but we only attended these three, and three days wasn’t nearly enough time to properly explore the shows that we did visit.

Here are a few more photos from the event. To see the full album, visit us on Facebook!

When in Vegas

It’s an otherworldly city, in the middle of the desert, filled with lights, outlandish occupants, entertainment, and most importantly, Magic. I’m not referring to the David Copperfield show at MGM Grand. No, I’m referring to Magic Trade Show, and the Glik’s buying team traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada this week for the sole fashionable purpose of style.

IMG_0021 IMG_0047

This monster of a convention plays host to shoe, apparel, and accessory brands from ALL over. If you’re in retail, no matter what your division, this is the place to be. Literally, there is so much going on in this small 72 hour window of time that–if you’re not careful– you have a chance of loosing your mind to sensory overload.

Here’s just a sneak peek of what happened in Vegas.

IMG_0151Day 1: As soon as the Glik’s team landed we checked our luggage and headed straight to the show. I spent the day with the Woman’s buying team at Magic.

534589327c6911e2802422000a9e0927_7Late afternoon we learned our fate. Our flight had been cancelled and we were stuck in Las Vegas for an extra day. Drat!

382183_10151455253538480_60866902_n-1We had to make due with our unfortunate circumstance by working poolside while under the attentive eyes of Glik’s President, Jeff Glik and Vice President, James Glik.
