Halloween Costume Ideas 2018

Halloween is quickly approaching (yet again) so now is the time to get your costume ready! This year, we are rounding up a few of our favorite Halloween looks! The best part is you can shop all of these looks at Glik’s! (online and in store) You’ll be sure to wear all of these pieces in your wardrobe anyways, so why not have a little fun and make a costume out of them?! Keep reading to see five head-to-toe costumes we got ready for you.

1. Angel

For this classic pick of good versus evil on Halloween, we decided to go the Angel route. However, we stepped this classic costume up a notch by making it super trendy!  Pair an extremely comfortable suede skort with this contrast faux fur sweater! Dress it up with a pair of nude heels or go the casual route with flats or sneakers! Finish off the look with a halo, wings, or any other accessories you love, find your Devil, and you’re ready to face whatever the night brings you.

2. Military

Combat the night with this camouflage look! This go-to costume is great for a last minute idea since camo clothing is totally in right now. We paired our Kancan Jeans Camouflage Moto pants with a cropped camouflage crew neck sweatshirt! Comfortable, stylish, and you’ll be sure to wear the pieces on repeat. Finish the look with a versatile pair of combat boots! You could seriously play some Halloween pranks on your friends with this look, they won’t even see you coming! 😉

3. Cher from Clueless

Ugh, as if! This makeshift look was created for 90s babies. This plaid wrap skirt is a great excuse to buy that bodysuit you’ve been eyeing! Complete this iconic uniform with a yellow blazer and heels, and don’t forget Cher’s natural sass. Find your Dionne and you can rule the night in true style!

4.  Rainbow Brite

Okay now, this is what dreams are made of! Everyone is crushing on the rainbow trend currently and everyone loves a good throwback. Become the cute and magical Rainbow Brite herself with this multi-striped shredded sweater! We decided to rock a party pony with Teleties and threw in a wand for good measure.  Bonus points if you pair the top with rainbow tights, too!

5. Morton Salt Girl

Just like the Coppertone girl, the Morton Salt Girl will never go out of style. For this look, all you need is a yellow jumpsuit or dress, a pair of Converse, an umbrella, and Morton Salt for extra props! Cute, comfy, and you’ll be able to wear this jumper and tennies year round!

Which look will you be wearing for Halloween this year? Make sure to check out our new arrivals online or in your local Glik’s to find the perfect pieces for your DIY costume this Halloween.

DIY Pom Pom Earrings

Who is ready for another DIY blog?! Today, we are going to be talking Pom Poms! Pom Pom accessories are one of my favorite things at the moment. Not only are they trendy, they are an easy way to make a plain outfit super loud and quirky. There are a couple different ways to do this trend and to make it your very own style.  I am going to show you two ways to make your very own pom pom earrings in less than 5 minutes each!

what you need

What you’ll need:

  • Pom poms (pre-made)
  • Yarn (to make your own poms)
  • Fork (to make your own poms)
  • Hoop Earrings
  • Post Earrings
  • 2” length of small chain
  • Needle
  • Embroidery Floss

Alrighty, now that we have everything we need it is time to get crafty. So since this DIY is so gosh darn simple we are going to be making two different kinds of pom pom earrings. One that is for beginner DIYers and then a slightly more difficult option.

Easy-peasy option: I bought some pre-made ones from a local Dollar Tree that came in a variety of colors so this is a good option if you don’t really want to make your own.

Slightly more effort option:  It is pretty easy to make your own pompoms with some yarn if you’re up for the challenge. I found a pretty simple way to make medium sized pom poms with just a fork. You just wrap the yarn around the fork about 20 times;  next, tie a piece in the center as tight as you can. Finally, cut the two sides and you are done. SIMPLE AS THAT FOLKS!

After you figured out your pom pom situation, take your pom pom, your hoop earring, and add a variety of pom poms. It’s up to you if you want to cover the whole thing in pom poms or just add a couple. Just find the center of your pom and thread it through with the back of the earring. That is all it takes for the hoop-pom pom earring style!  What I find fun about this DIY option is that you can make multiple colored poms and switch them out to match your outfits! Above you can see the easy and more difficult pom-pom options. For the pre-made pom poms, I just put a bunch on my earring hoop. For the homemade pom I went with just one simple pom on the hoop. Both are super cute way to add some color to your regular plain hoop earrings!

For another slightly more difficult option, grab a small 2 inch chain to put on the back of your earring post for a dangly-drop style earring. Thread your embroidery floss to your needle, find the center of your homemade pom and tie it up to the bottom chain. Then take the top of the chain, put it through whatever style of post earrings you want to wear that day and your ready to go! It really is that easy to make your own DIY Pom Pom earrings.

How to Make a DIY Gold Sequin Hanger

New Year. New Closet.

As a typical New Year’s Resolution, I always promise to clean out my closet. I am a grade A clothes hoarder, no lie. I have a hard time parting with things because I can justify keeping almost anything and panic at the thought of missing an old item of clothing. Throw away floral palazzo pants that I’ve only worn once? But what if I get invited to brunch and want to wear them! Part with a sweater I haven’t worn in 2 years? But what if I change my mind! Cleaning my closet this season is a looming, but necessary evil that I must face. To cheer myself up, I’ve decided to find a way to celebrate the clothing I am letting myself keep. Thanks to Pinterest, I’ve found an inexpensive way to do this and have decided to make DIY Gold Sequin Hangers to hang my favorite pieces. I feel like displaying my clothing in a glam way will not only make my closet prettier, but also make my clothes feel a little more valuable. That and gold sequin covered anything makes me happy.

With that said, here is a super easy (and cheap) DIY Gold Sequin Hanger tutorial.

  • Materials
    • Wooden hanger
    • 3-6 yards of sequin ribbon
    • Tacky glue
    • Scissors
    • 1 Q-tip

I purchased all of materials at Walmart, but I’m sure you could find them at any other local craft store or big-box store.

  1. Dot several inches of tacky glue on the back side of one end of the ribbon. Wait a few seconds so the glue can become tacky before applying to the hanger.
  1. Starting at one end of the wooden hanger, firmly press the ribbon onto the wooden part and wrap going in an inward direction.

*Helpful hint: Use the q-tip to wipe off any excess glue as you’re wrapping. You don’t want the glue to ooze through the ribbon and show on the outside.

  1. Continue wrapping the ribbon around the hanger while slightly overlapping the ribbon.

*Helpful hint: Keep the sequin ribbon pulled taut while you wrap.

  1. If desired, cut small piece of the sequin ribbon and glue to each end of the hanger. This will cover any exposed wood.
  1. TADA! That’s literally it. Let the glue dry completely before showcasing your top or dress on your new sequin hanger!

I hope that you and your closet find as much joy in the DIY Gold Sequin Hanger as I do!

DIY Fashion Gladiator Sandals for $21.90

Battle the heat this summer in your favorite cut off shorts and fashion forward sandals! There are TONS of styles to get excited about, but one constant you can count on is the gladiator sandal. This style can be dressed up with rhinestones and metallic straps or made casual with basic earthy colors. Whether they stop at your ankles or have a mid-calf fit, gladiator sandals are a great way to kick off the warm weather season.

We encourage you to get creative with your outfits this summer by adding a little boho charm to your sandals. You can make your own gladiator sandals with a simple pair of flip-flops and a fashion scarf.

What You Will Need for DIY Fashion Gladiator Sandals:

1.  First, you will need to lay the scarf out and cut it long ways. I folded it in half and lined up the edges in order to cut the scarf in a straight line. This is the scarf that I used.

2.  Take both pieces of the scarf and fold them in half.

It will loop around the toe post as shown above.

3.  Fold the left side down to the right and the right side down to the left as pictured.

4.  Twist the scarf and loop it around the straps of the flip flop until the strap is completely covered. Be sure to loop it up and under the strap.

5. Repeat steps on the other sandal. This is what they will look like after you are done. Now you can slip them on!

6.  Cross the straps around the back of your ankles and tie off. You can twist the scarf to achieve different looks.

And because there is no sewing, gluing, or knot tying in the construction of this gladiator sandal,  you can reuse all the materials however you see fit!

13.  Once the Almond Bark is cool and hardened, break up the popcorn and cereal mixtures and evenly layer them into your storage container. We started with the popcorn, cereal, and pretzels. We then added the peanuts, M&M’s, and Reese’s to the top since they are small and fall to the bottom easily.

Infinity Circle of Love | DIY How to Make an Infinity Scarf

Valentines Day 2014

Love is in the air!

As you prepare for Valentine’s Day, are you beginning to notice little displays of affection that are sometimes taken for granted the rest of the year? Handholding. Stolen kisses. It could be something as little as a glance. This is the time of year that people are on a quest for romance. And we find it everywhere.

Infinity sign with anchor and infinity nautical scarf

At Glik’s, we are channeling our romantic side with this year’s infinity scarf. The infinity sign has become a beacon of love, strength, and completion for many. Found in jewelry, scarves, clothing, and even on the skin in the form of tattoos, the infinity sign is a trending symbol that has grown exponentially. And its presence could be infinite (insert knee slap here).

shop Infinity scarf online

Worn year round, infinity scarves are one of the hottest fashion accessories for your wardrobe. Found in an assortment of solids, stripes, prints, and textures, these easy-to-wear scarves are great to style and go. And let’s not forget the variety of looks you can achieve by just switching your scarf! We are excited about the scarf line-up available this spring season at Glik’s.

The infinity scarf is given its name because it is circular in shape, giving it an “infinite” quality. The circle is a symbol of love and is linked to many traditions, including wedding bands. To style this scarf you simply put the scarf around your neck, twist it to a “figure 8” or infinity sign, and pull the second loop over your head. There are, of course, many creative ways to style the infinity scarf differently for a unique look. But the beauty of the infinity scarf is that you don’t need to!

DIY–How to Make an Infinity Scarf from a Traditional Scarf

The infinity scarf is a favorite of many because of its simplicity. So what happens when you see a traditional scarf that you simply can’t pass up? We can show you how to turn any traditional scarf into an infinity scarf–temporarily and infinitely.step

To make a temporary infinity scarf is quite simple. Instead of sewing the edges together, we’re going to tie 3 knots. First, fold the scarf in half so the shorter sides come together. You should end up with half the original length. Second, tie the end corners together in a small knot on both sides. You should have 2 completed knots. Finally, pinch the edge of each side in the middle between the 2 knots, and tie them together. You will have 3 knots in a straight line across the seamed ends.

how to make an infinity scarf

To style this tied infinity scarf, loop the scarf around your neck with the knots behind your head and style as normal. The temporary infinity scarf is beneficial because you can always untie the knots and style the scarf traditionally later.

Sewn together your own Infinity Scarf

A downfall to the temporary infinity scarf, however, is that it can create a bit of bulk where the ends are tied. By sewing the ends of the traditional scarf together, you can create a seamless fit around your neck. Transforming any scarf into an infinity scarf is really not difficult! Don’t be intimidated, because anyone can do it!

Do it yourself infinity scarf

You will start off the same way you did with the tied infinity scarf by first folding the scarf in half so the shorter sides come together. Be sure the top of each side of the scarf is facing in. If it is hard to determine, you can look at the hem of the scarf to determine which side is the top. After you have the scarf folded and the ends of the scarf are flush, pin the sides together to hold it in place.

how to make your own infinity scarf

After the scarf is pinned, you are ready to sew the ends together using a basic stitch, backstitching at the beginning and end.  It is important to give the scarf at least a ¼” seam allowance (maybe a little more if the fabric is an open weave) to avoid a split in the seam later.

When you are finished sewing the ends, trim the loose strings at each end.  Do not trim or cut the seam allowance of the scarf. This will prevent the seam from splitting.

Sew your own infinity scarf

Congratulations! You have a newly created infinity scarf! Altered for your convenience, your new favorite scarf print is now ready to be styled out in a breeze!

This year, let us all pledge to embrace the importance of love, family, and friendship not just on Valentine’s Day, but also all year long. The infinity sign has become an icon for love and strength. And you can wear it everyday with a cute and fashionable infinity scarf from Glik’s.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Weather

Tis the season… for ugly Christmas sweater parties! Fa la la la la, la la la la!  A few years ago, it became trendy to hunt down the most abhorred and kitschiest sweater you could find. Normally these pompom and bell embellished “ugly” sweaters could be found in thrift stores or even your close relative’s closets, but that’s not the case anymore. The vintage “ugly Christmas sweater” is now a rare bird in the retail world. In fact, retailers have begun to recreate the ugly holiday sweaters of years past.

Not a bad idea, but in an age of ‘Do It Yourselfers’ and the budget conscious, the idea of making your own ugly Christmas sweater is much more appealing. (Besides, who else would think to make the same ugly sweater as you?

For many of us, what’s considered in “bad taste” can be a much debatable topic, but the general rule when making an ugly Christmas sweater is “the uglier, the better.” We’re suggesting that you have free reign to attach as many tacky embellishments, obnoxious amounts of tinsel, and gaudy Christmas themed decorations as you want on your ugly sweater. If you’re looking to get a head start on your DIY ugly Christmas sweater, then we suggest starting out with the Ugly Christmas Sweater Kit.

Screen shot 2013-12-02 at 5.00.48 PM

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Kit has everything you need to custom make your own DIY ugly Christmas sweater.

Supplies Needed for Ugly Christmas Sweater:

  • Sweater/ Vest
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Various Christmas themed decorations (your preference)

IMG_4901_1 copy

  • The easiest and most inexpensive place to locate your sweater would be the local thrift shop or even your closet. Any sweater will do, it’s a matter of your personal preference.

  • Once you’ve chosen your sweater, lay it flat and plan out how you want to decorate your sweater while the hot glue gun heats up.
  • Any Christmas themed decoration of your choice will work. These objects can be totally unrelated to each other or part of one grand   design. Do not over-think your ugly Christmas sweater design, anything will do, and the idea is for your sweater to make absolutely no sense.

  • After your layout has been finalized, grab your (now) hot glue gun and start gluing down your final design. The Ugly Christmas Sweater Kit provides thread and glitter glue to use (if needed) as well.

  • Once you have glued everything in place, allow a few minutes for the glue to dry and set.

  • Remember. Your ugly Christmas sweater can be changed and re-arranged at any time, let all things gaudy and terribly tacky take over the style of your look.

Summer Essentials

We are slowly but surely transitioning over into a new season. Despite all of this crazy Midwest weather that we’ve been experiencing, our heavy, cold climate apparel is being packed away to make room for lighter layers.

At some point as you start packing and unpacking you start to think about what add-ons you need to have in your wardrobe to complete your summer outfits. Personally I usually buy accessories, like a few new bracelets and rings, a super versatile pair of summer heels, flats and sandals, a light scarf, and a good jacket that I can transition easily amongst my outfits.

Once you find your essential add-ons creating a summer look will be easy. Below are a few of my newest add-on additions.

Above, the Golden Days thong sandal (only $9.90) from Charles Albert.

A great denim jacket from Silver Jeans Co. that will work with any outfit.

A summer scarf and our Glimmer of Gold gladiator sandal from Charles Albert.

Accessories and white denim shorts are a must! I love our bright Knot Your Average neon necklace and stacks of cute beaded bracelets! Visit us on Pinterest for a ton of DIY bracelet tutorials!
